Balanced Rock Falls

It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to take the whole family camping. But this past weekend, everything fell into place, and the weather was beautiful. So we headed out to the Buffalo National River to get some much needed outdoor therapy.

Saturday we hiked the Balanced Rock Falls trail. It was a nice adventurous-but-not-sketchy creek trail. Our normal choice for creek trails can be a bit too dangerous for kiddos and doggos, but this one was perfect. We did take a wrong turn after crossing the creek, but luckily we didn’t venture too far off course. We found our way back and up the hill to Balanced Rock Falls. When we finally reached the top to see the waterfall, my inner child took over, and I scaled the side of the waterfall to play in the water and get some cool photos.

The weather got a little chilly at night (31° on Friday and 42° on Saturday), but we managed to stay warm and cozy. I can thank my Campfire Queen (aka, the keeper of many blankets) for that.

Despite some initial kiddo resistance and a little complaining, I’d say the weekend was a success. It was a great opportunity to pry the young, impressionable minds away from screens for a few days.

The Vegvisir pendant was purchased from Shire Post Mint.

Hey Jeromy – I follow you on Instagram & then linked to your website this morning. You are an interesting creative kinda guy. Love your family time you have exploring the outdoors. I have visited many waterfalls in the Ponca/Boxley Valley area over the years. I am going to visit Balanced Rock Falls this Spring, Can you give me good instructions how to get to the falls starting at the Ponca Access low water bridge? I would greatly appreciate it.

Outdoor photography is one of my passions, please browse to my website – – when you have time. I am not trying to sell you photos, just showing you some of my outdoors adventures.

    Thanks for your help,

Hey Kirk! I’m happy to see someone besides me actually reads my posts 😆. I checked out your site. I love your photography!

Balanced Rock is a really easy to follow trail. The trailhead is just across the Ponca Landing bridge immediately to the right. When you first start, the trail splits. Stay to the left going towards the creek. I use the AllTrails app, so that helps keep me on track. After about .4 miles, the trail crosses the creek. When you cross, go left. Then the trail will take you up the hill to the waterfall. When we first crossed, we made the mistake of turning right. There’s a clear trail that direction that leads to more cascades.
